English 원문
Late afternoon light filtered through the cracked wooden walls of the garden shed, drawing pale stripes across piles of paint pots and broken rakes. Nia wiped her palms on her jeans and eyed an old workbench that blocked the only clear patch of floor. Leaves shifted outside with a dry rustle, and warm air carried the smell of cut grass into the narrow space. Luis crouched beside the bench and tapped one leg; fine dust leaped away, then drifted back. He glanced fondly at a faded pencil mark that still measured his height from years earlier, yet the plank before him looked heavier than memory.
Together they tried the simplest approach first. Nia gripped one corner while Luis lifted the other, but the burden of swollen oak and damp tools refused to budge. He adjusted his stance, slid a metal bar beneath the frame, and pressed downward; the board groaned, rose an inch, then sank again. A loose screw scratched the floor, and flakes of rust sprinkled the boards like red snow. Luis exhaled, rolled his shoulders, and began removing drawers to lighten the load. Nia stacked each drawer near the doorway, then wedged her foot against the wall for leverage. Wood creaked louder, and the bench edged forward the width of a coin.
Afterward, when the final drawer clattered free, a thin gap appeared behind the bench. Nia reached inside and pulled out a small tin box, sides spotted with age. The lid stuck, so Luis teased it open with the flat of a chisel. Inside lay marbles, two ticket stubs, and a plastic whistle still bright blue. Luis turned the whistle between his fingers; a smear of oil on the metal caught the light. Outside, a lone cricket chirped once, and a beam of dust-specked light hung across the opened gap.
