English 원문
Warm midday wind rolled across the savannah, pushing pale grasses into gentle waves. Elias stopped where the ground rose just enough to overlook a shallow basin dotted with thorn trees. He unfolded a narrow tripod and fixed his blank canvas, the legs sinking slightly into crumbly, ochre soil. A tin box of brushes opened beside his boot, and he mixed water with dry pigment until a muted gold gleamed against the palette. His arm moved in long strokes, tracing the far tree line, hoping the light would hold until the lower edge of sky cooled.
The wind gathered strength without warning. The canvas rocked, and a brittle twig snapped under the rear leg, tilting the whole frame. His first lines blurred. Elias crouched, slid a flat stone beneath the tripod, then pressed both palms along the upper bar until the wobble faded. The steadiness brought a marked improvement: each new line stayed crisp, and the basin’s curve sharpened on the surface. Beyond the rise, a small herd of antelope drifted into view. Calves broke from their mothers in brief frolic, kicking loose dust that silvered in sunlight and settled again around their nimble hooves.
One calf veered higher up the slope, its attention snagged by the standing shape of canvas and wood. It bounded forward, startled its own reflection in the wet paint, and skidded. A clump of damp soil clung to its forehoof; the next hop sent a spray across Elias’s work. An ochre arc flecked the lower corner, and a neat hoofprint stamped the center before the calf regained balance and darted downhill. Elias steadied the tripod with his knee, watched the unexpected mark spread into thin spokes, then lowered his brush without touching it. The herd faded behind waving grass, the wind eased, and afternoon light thinned to amber. The canvas, speckled by the ochre arc and a single neat hoofprint, rested against the steady tripod.
