English 원문
Lucas placed his folded stool against the harbor railing just as first light brushed the water. The tide rustled under the boards, and the distant horizon carried a thin silver line where sky touched sea. A low wind scattered salt across his jacket, tugging at his satchel while he walked toward the silent amusement pier. Broken lamps dotted the path, glass shards blinking when gulls crossed overhead. He searched for a quiet corner to sketch, drawn by talk of an old carousel whose paint still clung to wood—bright enough, perhaps, for charcoal to catch.
A padlocked gate blocked the pier entrance. Lucas pressed the latch; corrosion held firm. He shifted his stance, shoulder against iron, and pushed again. The lock surrendered with a hollow snap, granting a narrow escape for the restless wind that rushed between his legs. Boards groaned beneath each step. At the center waited the carousel, its platform listing, horses, lions, and dragons frozen in uneven ranks. Sunlight fell through missing roof planks, striping the silent menagerie with alternating gold and shadow—perfect contrast for strong, swift lines.
Lucas unfolded the stool, balanced his sketchbook, and lifted a charcoal stick. A sudden gust slapped the pages; the stick slipped, rolled, and vanished between floorboards. He crouched, eye close to the gap. Swirling brine reflected light, and beneath the slats floated a cluster of colorful paper boats. They bobbed and turned beside the lost charcoal. Shoulders tight, he lay flat, arm extended, fingertips brushing only damp air. Another sheet drifted away, its edge dipping toward the water before snagging on a bent nail.
Footsteps thudded behind him. A teenage girl in rubber boots knelt a short distance away, folding another square of newspaper with quick thumbs. She guided the finished boat through a missing plank; it joined the fleet below. An older man leaned against a post, silent bystander to the quiet launch, hands buried in his coat pockets. Lucas closed his sketchbook. Between warped boards, small weeds pushed toward daylight—bright green new beginnings stitched through gray timber. He watched the boats spin once more, then followed the crunch of gravel back toward open daylight.
Seaweed and torn ribbons rested against the pier pilings.
