Mateo and Lina pushed through the wet echo of the aquarium entrance. A fiberglass model of a narwhal floated above the walkway, the spiral tusk catching silver light from ceiling lamps. Warm air met cool glass, and a thin mist settled on every surface. Splashing sounds tapped against the walls while distant pumps hummed like low drums. The pair reached the circular reef tank, sketch pads already open; bright bands of coral filled the water like woven ribbons.

Visitors crowded the rail, phones raised. Mateo’s shoulder brushed a stroller, so he stepped sideways, but another family closed the gap. Lina pointed toward a narrower panel of glass, and they edged along the curved wall. Condensation blurred their view; Mateo wiped with his sleeve, yet moisture returned. A tiny seahorse drifted past, thin tail wrapped around a plastic stem, then disappeared behind the fogged patch. Near the sandy bottom, a lobster levered itself under a slab of stone and kicked up pale dust that clouded the water even more.

A quiet click sounded overhead; every projector lamp dimmed at once. The reef lost its carnival glow, and rough skeletons emerged where color had shone. Grey fingers of coral stood exposed, their surfaces dull and fragile. Projector bulbs had been positioned above the tank, and bright filters had masked the spread of coral bleaching beneath shifting light. Lina crouched, comparing the drained shapes with the sketch lines already on her page. Mateo tapped the glass again; the seahorse drifted back, now almost the same tone as the fading branches. He glanced upward; staff behind a window adjusted controls, and strong white beams flared, returning painted brightness just as new visitors arrived behind them. Dim blue water rested behind the clear glass.

頭頂傳來輕微喀嚓聲，投影燈同時熄暗。礁石失去嘉年華般的光彩，粗糙骨架現身於原本絢爛的位置。灰色珊瑚枝枒暴露在外，表面暗淡脆弱。投影燈曾被安置在缸上方，鮮豔濾光片遮掩了珊瑚白化在光影間的蔓延。莉娜蹲下，比對紙上線條與突然褪色的形體。馬泰奧再度輕敲玻璃；海馬回到視野，顏色幾乎與黯淡枝條一致。他抬頭望向窗後，工作人員調整控制器，強烈白光再度灑下，重新覆上人造亮色，而新的參觀者已到他們背後。昏藍水體靜靜停在透明玻璃後。
