English 원문
Cool sawdust pressed against Thea’s fingertips as she lifted a slender wooden lattice from the bench. Steel-grey light slanted through the high window, revealing a pale ocean-colored stain that ran along one edge of the frame. Joel steadied the opposite side; the lattice had been sanded smooth, yet a single splinter stuck out like a thorn and caught his sleeve. Their shared goal was simple: slide the piece onto the drying rack above the door before afternoon moisture reached it.
They had measured the gap earlier, but the first lift failed when the upper crossbar grazed a beam. Joel set the lattice down, and both examined the space once more. A thin copper ruler, usually kept for marking joints, became their chosen lever. Thea wedged its flat end under the lower slat while Joel leaned forward; the board flexed but still refused to clear the beam. At that moment, a rivulet from the cracked gutter outside slipped beneath the door, winding across the floor and darkening the silver dust. The water met a low embankment of curled shavings near their boots, paused, then pushed through, carrying fine fibers in slow swirls. The unexpected trickle left Joel’s shoes damp and forced the pair to shift their stance.
They intertwined two lengths of cool blue twine, looped the braid around the lattice, and tried a hoist from a safer angle. With the ruler acting as a gentle wedge, the frame edged higher, scraped once, and finally slid onto the top rail. Thea stepped back, wiping frost-white powder from her palms, while Joel nudged the ruler onto the bench. Neither noticed the splinter break away and fall into the growing stream below. They left through the side yard, conversation already drifting to the next task. Behind them, the thin rivulet kept crawling between pale shavings toward the far drain.
