English 원문
Nora swung a half-filled watering can toward the drooping fern beside the garden bench. She had balanced the can carefully on the bench while untangling its metal handle, yet the quick motion nudged a trowel that lay near her boots. The trowel clattered against the stone edge, and a striped cat dozing under the bench sprang up, tail puffed. Startled, the cat rushed across the lawn and scrambled onto the ivy-covered trellis. Vines quivered as claws gripped them; loose seeds from an overripe sunflower shook free and rained onto the soil. A robin, pecking nearby, lifted away just in time, wings beating a dusty swirl beneath the arching leaves.
The robin’s sudden flight brushed a hanging string that secured Nora’s wind chime. The chime spun, knocking a cluster of unripened tomatoes below. They tumbled down the slight slope, tapping against one another like marbles. A small terrier at the back gate noticed the rolling fruit and bounded forward. Its leash, already stretched, dragged a wooden stake so that the line carved a shallow groove in the ground. Coincidence piled upon coincidence until the final tomato lodged against an old irrigation pipe half-buried near the hedge. The impact cracked soft clay that had been caked over years; a faint aspiration of air hissed through the new gap.
Nora knelt, brushing soil aside. A narrow slit had been hidden beneath the thick ivy, and, occasionally, spurts of water followed the escaping air. She paused to marvel at the small, hidden system that breathed under her garden. It looked like pure serendipity, yet every motion had a clear source she could trace. Before she could plug the leak, the terrier lunged once more; the leash jerked tight and pinned a dangling vine across the broken pipe, limiting the spray and redirecting it toward the bed of thirsty mint. Droplets scattered, leaves glistened, and the leash line trembled between post and collar, swaying above the crushed tomatoes.
