When she jabbed harder, the blade thudded, jolting a green frog that had nested against the cool bin wall. The startled frog sprang onto a glass bottle leaning near the timbers of the compost frame. The vessel rolled along the moist rim and tipped sugary dregs onto the gravel with a sticky glug. That syrupy scent quickly drew several striped bees from the flowering basil row nearby. Their sudden cloud buzzed around Tamsin’s sleeves, and one brushed the hanging trowel on the shed door. The metal swung outward, bumping the brass spigot behind it just enough for water to hiss into the loose hose. The hose writhed free, its coil straightening along the path like a sleepy snake today. Cold water splashed forward, throwing a fresh metallic tang into the air around the beds.

The hose kept uncoiling, and the watery ribbon crawled toward the newly seeded carrot row beside Finn’s herb bed. Tamsin stepped sideways to navigate the moving line and planted her boot on the hose at its balance point. She then wedged the warped paddle through the reel spokes to hold the drum still firmly. The makeshift brace held; the reel stopped spinning, and the flow slowed to a gentle trickle that no longer threatened the seedlings. She had lost minutes, yet the dropped syrup had soaked the dry crest of compost, softening the stubborn clumps without extra effort. Thin rivulets now slid around her wheelbarrow’s tyre, carrying crumbly, dark grains toward the lower path.
