Lena lifted a heavy metal bowl onto the wooden table. She planned to test a new recipe for small apple cakes. Afternoon light fell across the small kitchen. She checked the quality of each apple and set them aside. The beautiful skins reflected thin stripes of yellow light. She reached for cinnamon on the top shelf beside the clock.

The jar slipped from her fingers and struck a metal spoon. The spoon jumped forward and tapped a heavy rolling pin. The pin rolled across fresh flour and nudged the apple pile. Apples scattered over the edge, one bouncing toward the open door. That apple hit a pale bucket filled with cool water. Water spilled onto the floor and raced under the low cupboard. The quick stream added intrigue to Lena’s quiet plan. She grabbed a thick towel and pressed it against the gap. Fabric soaked fast and slowed the shining flow. A single drop slid along the tilted board toward the mat.
