Lena balanced a full bucket of warm, soapy water and stepped away from the kitchen sink. The afternoon air smelled of dish soap, and sunlight painted shifting squares on the tiles. She had swept the floor earlier and believed her single-bucket theory would finish the quick wash before lunch. Halfway through the doorway, her elbow brushed against the living room sofa that crowded the narrow passage. The bucket tilted, and water poured over the rim. A pale stream raced across the floor, turned the corner toward the living room, and found an invisible dip beneath the rug. The dip worked like a tiny riverbed; the stream slipped under the rug and reappeared near a stack of thin puzzle boxes resting against the wall.

The boxes absorbed the water, swelled, then burst apart. Pieces skated outward and knocked a small side table. The table’s single leg wobbled; a mug that balanced near the edge toppled and added more liquid to the growing current. Lena lunged, but the fluid reached farther each second. Several crayons have been trapped under the sofa, and now the colored paper casings bobbed on the wave like little boats. She grabbed the nearest object—a cozy blanket folded on the arm of the sofa—and pressed it against the wet front, forming a soft dam. The flow slowed, then pooled quietly. She folded the heavy, damp blanket in half and laid it inside a plastic tub. Drops tapped the tub’s base in a thin, steady line toward the drain.
