English 원문
Felix, a young clay gatherer, reached the open yard behind the workshop. His goal was simple: lift the newest pottery bowls from the low shelf beside the brick kiln before stray dogs knocked them over. Two forces struck him at once. Hot air rolled outward from the kiln, and a sudden wind pushed loose ash across the yard, stinging his eyes. Loose ash was lifted by the gusts and swirled like gray ribbon. Gravel shifted with a dry crunch under each step, and the scent of warm earth floated between the stacked firewood. The golden afternoon sun added soft glare, turning every pale shard on the ground into a bright mirror. Felix has already spent hours shaping those bowls, which have cooled just enough to touch.
He squinted, then grabbed a wide, warped drying board that leaned against a barrel. Holding the board like a shield, he faced the wind so the plank caught the flying ash. With that force blocked, he edged closer to the shelf, knees bent against the heat rising from the bricks. Ash struck the board again and again; the surface darkened, then thin smoke curled where sparks landed. A corner split, and black flakes drifted away, leaving tiny burnt marks on the pale sand—a pattern Felix never planned. He reached for the first bowl, but another gust tipped the weakened board sideways and fresh ash poured over the shelf. He let the smoking board slump beside the path and lifted his eyes instead. A broad-winged hawk circled above the yard, and his gaze followed its silent glide.
