Ben balanced a canvas sack of grain on one shoulder while Mira steadied the other end. They crossed the narrow footbridge toward the meadow where the village planned an evening ceremony for incoming birds. The sack contained seed, a scarce resource after several dry weeks, and its weight pulled their arms low. Cool morning air met warm sun, and a thin mist clung to reeds beside the planks. Light reflected off the damp wood in pale, moving stripes. Dew reduced their traction, and the boards flexed under every step. The heavy load slid slightly with each sway. Far overhead, geese began to form uneven lines; soon they would migrate across the valley.

When the pair reached the midpoint, a pheasant burst from the reeds with sudden wing-beats. The shock made Ben twist, and grain spilled through a seam in the sack. Seed pattered on the planks and slipped between gaps, forming a small mound whose density surprised them. Ben crouched to grip the tear, yet the sack still sagged. Mira knelt, cupped handfuls of grain, and tipped them into a spare tin bucket hanging at her belt. Dividing the weight helped. The bridge boards bent less, and their shoes gained better grip on the damp surface. Together they inched forward until the bridge ended and firm meadow soil supported their steps.

They reached the clearing marked for the ceremony and poured seed in a broad ring. Wind pushed loose kernels across the grass. Small fish gathered where earlier grains floated near the bridge pilings. The half-empty sack lay between two neat piles of feed, its torn edge pinned with a twig. Their combined palm prints streaked the pale cloth in matching arcs. A passing gust rippled the loose cloth edge against the grass.
