Rae and Leo reached the low dune that rose between the shore and their chosen picnic spot. The cooler they dragged behind them felt heavier with every step, while a steady onshore breeze pushed against their backs. Fine salt spray drifted through afternoon light, mixing pale glitter with the soft hiss of sliding water. A gull's sharp cry heralded a higher wave, yet the siblings kept hauling. Leo leaned forward and pulled, but the thick sand swallowed the cooler’s little wheels. Rae pushed from behind; the load barely moved, then rolled back a finger’s width. They tried again, switching places, but gravity and grit joined forces and left them red-faced and panting. A small crab watched from a nearby hollow, its eyes twitching each time the cooler slipped.

Rae, always savvy with knots, noticed the wind tugging at the loose towel around Leo’s waist. An idea sparked. She tied the towel’s corners to the cooler handle, making a quick sail. Leo steadied the box while Rae angled the cloth toward the breeze. The next gust filled the towel like a balloon and, with a low scrape, the cooler edged upward. Each new puff of wind added lift, and soon the heavy load glided over the dune’s crest. Success arrived too quickly. The same gust that helped now gave no pause; the cooler kept sliding down the far slope, gathering speed over the smoother sand. It bumped the hollow, collapsing the crab’s doorway, and carried shells and pebbles in its wake before stopping near a patch of sea grass. Rae folded the sandy towel and placed it on top of the closed lid. She wiped grainy salt from the cooler’s handle.
