"The crate tilted again."

Pip the raccoon froze, paws buried in loose soil. He had spent the warm morning scratching for fallen seeds beside the patio. Warm air pressed against the damp earth, and a faint engine hum drifted over the fence. A substantial green watering can balanced on top of the wooden crate at the wall’s edge. Neighbours had stacked it there weeks earlier, calling the arrangement a quick bargain during their clear-out. According to their proposal, the crate would hold spare garden tools until new shelves arrived. For Pip, the tall stack simply blocked an easy path toward the bird feeder.

A dry gust swept through the yard and rocked the watering can sideways. Water sloshed inside, tipped over the rim, and darkened the crate’s top plank. The extra weight pushed the stack forward; the can slid, struck a plastic toy truck, and knocked it free. The small truck rolled downhill, clipped a metal toolbox, and popped its lid open. A long-handled trowel became the next loose item, clattering toward Pip’s paws. He jumped left to avoid the metal flash, claws scraping the flagstone in one swift move. The crate kept tilting, water kept spilling, and garden soil streamed through its gaps. Pip ducked beneath a bench to take a break from the swaying heap. From his new spot he watched water travel past the truck and toward a storm drain, carrying fine sand in a trembling ribbon. The bird feeder still hung untouched, yet Pip’s nose turned instead toward a sudden, sweet smell of ripe fruit drifting from the compost pile. He left the half-dug patch and tracked the fresh scent beyond the overturned tools.

浣熊皮普僵住，爪子埋在鬆軟的土裡。整個暖洋洋的早晨，他一直在天井邊翻找掉落的種子。溫熱的空氣貼著濕土，微弱的引擎聲從籬笆外傳來。一個結實的綠色澆水壺放在牆邊的木箱頂上。鄰居幾週前把它們堆在那裡，自誇這是一次便宜的清倉。照他們的說法，木箱暫時存放園具，直到新層架送到。對皮普而言，這高高的堆疊只是擋住了通往鳥食器的捷徑。

一陣乾風掠過院子，把澆水壺搖向一邊。水在壺內晃動，濺過壺口，弄濕了箱頂木板。增加的重量把整堆推向前；澆水壺滑落，撞上塑膠玩具卡車，把卡車撞出來。小卡車沿斜坡滾下，擦過金屬工具箱，掀開了箱蓋。一把長柄小鏟成了下一件鬆動的物品，碰得一聲衝向皮普的爪子。他猛地向左跳開，爪子在石板上刮出聲響。木箱繼續傾斜，水繼續傾倒，花園土從縫隙中流出。皮普鑽到長椅下，躲開這搖晃的高堆，順便休息一下。新的位置讓他看見水流過卡車，向雨水孔湧去，帶著細沙畫出顫抖的帶狀痕跡。鳥食器依舊懸在原處，然而皮普的鼻子轉向另一頭，聞到堆肥堆飄出的熟果甜味。他離開半掘的土坑，追著那股新鮮氣味，走過翻倒的工具。
