When the Brick Slipped- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

At the back of a quiet allotment, a ferret nosed along the stone foundation of an old greenhouse. Afternoon light spilled over cracked bricks; a distant bell clanged beyond the trees. A narrow tunnel opened below one plank, and the smell of stored grain drifted out. A bent nail aimed upward near the tunnel mouth, scratching the ferret’s whiskers. A loose board covered half the gap, but a brick lay on its far end, holding the wood down. Behind the ferret, rain from the morning still dripped from a plastic tube—an odd bit of innovation among weathered beams. Each drip landed in soft soil and ran toward the board in a thin line. The ferret pushed the nearer edge with both forepaws. The plank bent, yet the brick’s weight answered, and the gap stayed closed. Similarly, biting the edge only scattered splinters.

Thin mud slid past the ferret’s toes as another drop widened the groove beside them. Whiskers twitched toward the motion, and claws darted, carving a shallow channel from the puddle toward the brick. Water seeped along the fresh path, darkening earth around the weight. Soon the mud loosened; gravity tipped the block sideways. The free end of the board rose without another push, and the slender body slipped into the tunnel. The sudden tilt sent the brick rolling into the trickle. Mud splashed, and water hurried through the new groove, sweeping dry grain from an overturned pot nearby. Kernels tumbled after the brick, rolling out of sight under the frame. Outside, the puddle thinned. Drops fell less often from the tube, and the small channel gleamed in fading light.
