Salty damp wood scraped against Reed's palms as he crouched on the pier. Beside him, a wildlife ranger named Troy steadied a crate stuffed with jungle leaves that still dripped rainwater. Their goal was simple: hoist the crate onto the gangplank before dusk. Two elastic forces fought for space above their heads. A winch line stretched from the mast to a cleat, thrumming like a giant guitar string. At the same time a wide fishing net hung from a pulley, its wet cords sagging, then springing back as the boat rocked. A harbor seal bobbed near the hull, blinking whenever the lines slapped the surface. The constant rebound of rope and net kept Reed leaning back and shifting his boots across the ancient, cracked planks. Behind them, the cozy harbor office glowed through a small window.

When a sharp lurch rolled through the vessel, the net whipped sideways. Reed grabbed a rubber fender anchored near the bollard and twisted it free. He propped the rounded pad between himself and the swaying cords; the fender flexed, absorbing the hit as the net slapped, then drooped. With that pressure muffled, he turned toward the winch line. Sweat darkened his sleeves while he pinched the rope and eased it off the cleat one turn at a time. The line slackened, then bounced lightly against his knee. Behind him the fender showed a fresh split, and strips of blue rubber curled away to reveal pale inner layers. Water stilled around the seal, and the animal drifted under the pier. The winch drum fell silent, and small bubbles popped once, then the surface smoothed into unbroken silver.
