Fine dust clung to Sage’s palms, softer than flour and cool against his skin. He brushed it onto the floorboards and lifted a thin glass sheet that had waited on the bench since dawn. Beyond the open doorway the valley shone under clear noon light; wildlife slipped between sun-bleached rocks, and an eagle traced a wide circle high above the ridge. Freedom hung in the doorway as moving air mixed daylight with the faint smell of pine resin from stacked timber. The brass compass, which lay near the edge of the bench, caught one firm ray of sun.

A sharp reflection burst from the compass and leapt onto an amber varnish jar. The liquid inside bent the ray, turning it into a glowing stripe that raced across the table and climbed the glass sheet in Sage’s hands. The pane scattered the beam into shifting bands of green and violet that fluttered along the rafters like loose ribbons. Sage squinted, then stepped sideways so his shoulder blocked part of the flare, yet the colors kept wandering over the walls and tools. As the sun inched lower, the stripe stretched, slipped past his arm, and painted bright ladders on stacked paper patterns. He had worked in this room for many seasons, and the oak bench already showed pale scars where earlier beams had lingered too long. Shadows from the doorway soon mingled with the drifting colors, breaking them into restless shards. Outside, light rolled down the far slope and flashed off river stones. New bands swept across the floorboards and chased the first colors toward the back wall.

一道銳利的反射從圓規上炸開，跳到一瓶琥珀色清漆上。瓶中的液體折射那道光，把它變成一道明亮的條紋，衝過桌面，爬上賽奇手中的玻璃。玻璃把光線打散成變化不定的綠紫色帶，像鬆動的緞帶般在屋梁間飄動。賽奇眯起眼，側身一步，用肩膀遮住部分炫光，但顏色仍在牆與工具上游走。隨著太陽逐漸西斜，條紋拉長，滑過他的手臂，在疊放的紙樣上畫出明亮階梯。他在這間房裡已工作好幾個季節，橡木工作台早留下一道道被日光長時間停留的淺痕。門口投進的陰影與漂浮的色帶交織，把光分割成不安的碎片。屋外，陽光順著遠坡滑下，閃過河石。新的光帶掠過地板，追趕著先前的顏色向後牆奔去。
