Six neat roof tiles lay between the stairwell door and the metal railing. Lily crouched beside a small telescope that stood on a short tripod. She turned the focus wheel, following a gradual process she had practiced downstairs. Two meters away, her friend Suki arranged thin glass disks inside a wooden frame. Each disk creaked when she nudged it, promising a clear, ringing tone later. A large ventilation fan above the lift shaft added a low hum across the open space. A small portable radio beside Lily played a nostalgic tune that skipped slightly at each chorus. From somewhere higher, a gull cried and the sound echoed against silver pipes. Warm sunlight touched the tarred surface, while the distant harbor smell mixed with paint.

Suki tapped the first disk; a bright resonance bounced back toward the telescope. The hum from the fan joined the note, creating a strange vibration in the tripod legs. The telescope shivered, its eyepiece sliding off Lily’s eyebrow. Caught by surprise, she shifted her weight and the tripod edged closer to the frame. The movement trapped one corner of the frame, pushing the disks tighter together. Their combined pitch climbed until even the gull flapped away. Lily traced the source of the shaking and angled the telescope away from the sound stream. The new position broke the resonance and the tripod became quiet. Freed at once, Suki lifted the frame and spaced the disks with steady fingers. The fan kept humming, yet its tone no longer matched the glass. A softer ring hovered in the air, then drifted toward neighboring roofs. Lily tightened the final locking knob and stepped back. Suki placed the frame on a foam pad beside the tripod. A faint ring lingered above the railing as both girls turned toward the next task.
