By the time Ruby had circled the waiting room twice, a thin ribbon of damp soil curved beside the reception desk. Ticket numbers popped through tinny speakers, then faded under the scrape of shoe soles on linoleum. Ruby paused; the soil trail ended at a crushed stalk carrying one purple wildflower. Its petals remained half-torn yet still held a radiant beauty in the harsh white light. A distant cough echoed down the hallway; no one claimed the stalk. The queue lurched forward out of order, bells dinging, and Ruby’s own ticket—clipped to a half-filled form—remained silent.

Another buzz rolled from the hallway toward the pharmacy window, where cartons thudded behind a half-closed shutter. Ruby bent, brushed the soil, and the faint crunch of grit answered her fingertips. She followed the tiny noises—bits of stem crackling under light steps—until the trail vanished at a carrier perched on a bench. Inside, a small rabbit shifted, its whiskers tapping plastic walls like a drum roll. The creature worked a leaf between its teeth, and garden earth sprinkled the floor each time the box rocked. A boy beside the carrier juggled blank papers; the printer had smudged his forms. The clerk’s voice crackled, repeating the form number.

Ruby crouched and slid the fallen wildflower through a vent in the lid. The rabbit sniffed, nibbled, and a gentle rustle vibrated inside. Only then did she notice a frayed ribbon on the handle: the same shade as the crushed petals. The earlier soil trail, once mistaken for careless boots, now sounded like soft footsteps of a furry friend smuggled through the door. Numbers jumped on the screen; hers finally blinked green. She straightened, but the boy beat her to the counter, papers fluttering under the loud shuffle of his sneakers. A janitor lifted a mop over the faint smear and water tapped the linoleum.
