A thin green bar filled only halfway across the gate’s tiny screen, pulsing beside Viola’s frozen card. The overhead speaker droned platform numbers, while engines beneath the floor gave a low rumble that vibrated the metal rail she held. A small plush frog keychain squeaked against her backpack zipper each time she shifted her weight forward. In her other hand a clear tub of cress slid, its damp cotton smelling of garden after rain. Bright petals in early bloom lay on top as garnish for the science-club tasting later. She hoped to catch the 08:17 bus upstairs, yet this blinking half-credit threatened the plan. A short hiss from opening doors reminded her of the schedule gap, and she turned toward the recharge machine across the hall.

Coins clinked inside the machine as Viola fed them; the panel chimed, and the balance had been restored by the last coin. She had carefully balanced the tub on the machine’s narrow plastic ledge near the glowing panel. A sudden metallic clang from a closing gate startled a passer-by who brushed her elbow. The tub tipped; petals slid with a soft patter, and one stray raindrop from a leaky skylight splashed onto the soil. Dale, queueing behind, heard the faint patter and caught the container before it fell farther. His cuff brushed the keys, producing a bright jingle that echoed sharply between the tiled walls. Together they crouched, fingers scraping over the polished floor to gather the scattered petals quickly. The engine vents overhead kept humming, counting seconds while doors downstairs began their warning buzz.

The 08:17 already hissed at the curb outside, brake pads singing under the steady drizzle. Viola folded a paper napkin, gently pressing the rescued petals into two small heaps inside. Half of the petals returned to the tub on the damp cotton bed once again. The rest lay inside the napkin that Dale pinched closed like a tiny envelope neatly. He steadied the tub while she tapped the gate again; the reader beeped twice, then swung open. Viola stepped through, carrying the patched container, and Dale followed with the napkin parcel raised above jostling shoulders. The platform speakers launched another metallic chime as their bus number flashed brightly on screens. The rolling hum of tires merged with their quick footsteps toward the stairs just ahead.
