English 원문
"The basin tilts left," Oscar said.
Flora braced both palms against the sun-warmed rim. Afternoon light poured through the high window, sliding over amber shavings that clung to every plank. Their goal was simple: rinse brushes before a lasting coat of varnish cooled on the bristles. Oscar tipped a jar of rinse water. The basin rocked; a caramel stream escaped, slipped along a line of reciprocal grooves etched across the worktable, and vanished through a narrow gap. Those grooves had been carved by an earlier carpenter and were now filled again, as if awakened. The damp trail fostered tiny rivulets that carried sawdust and thin curls of dye toward the floor.
The first splash pattered onto a stack of pine offcuts. Water soaked the pile, then dripped onto a shallow tray where clay bowls waited. Oscar lifted one to check its wellbeing; fine cracks brightened under the moisture, so he set it aside. Below, the runaway water met a mound of dry straw kept for packing. Color from dissolved dye spread across the straw, creating a copper tint that crawled outward like a miniature ecosystem in motion. Wind from the open door nudged the glowing straw toward a rack of sketches, and a corner sheet bent dangerously.
Flora slid a broad plank between table and straw, blocking the flow. The liquid redirected, eased down the board, and landed inside a forgotten bucket with a hollow thud. The fading trickle revealed the hidden channel system—grooves, gaps, and trays—working like a silent partner that caught excess before it harmed any tool. Oscar steadied the final drop with a cloth, then propped the plank for the next task. A faint scent of cedar oil drifted above the bench.
