English 원문
Bending over the tilted board, Viola swept a wet band of blue across the upper paper. Her wrist stayed steady, and her knees bent slightly for balance on the low porch stool. The afternoon sun pressed on her back, and the drying boundary already inched downward slowly. She reached toward the palette, but her elbow grazed the lightweight plastic rinse cup beside it. The cup rocked, knocking against a pot left from planting season; cloudy water swarmed up its side. Viola lunged forward, fingers slippery from stray pigment, yet the cup tipped toward her abruptly. It struck the edge of the paint palette; that light tray slid across the low table with a dull scrape. A nuthatch shot away from the porch railing at the sudden clatter, its sharp call cutting through garden air. Drops leapt from the cup and began to buffet the fresh wash at the edges. Tiny circles darkened the still-wet sky like coins landing on a pond under faint light. Viola’s shoulders tightened; she lifted the board slightly, hoping gravity might guide the water away.
The sliding tray bumped a round brush, and the brush rolled downward, bumping the board’s metal clip. It halted against Viola’s palm, a second collision that pushed a thicker wave toward the paper’s lower edge. A pale bloom had been formed on the sky wash, and streaks of grey crawled toward the horizon she had pencilled. Pigment and water seemed ready to settle a score right on the page today together. Each tried to claim the same stripe of paper before her brush reached that spot. If the cup leaned further, the spill would reach the brush jar as well soon. Viola wedged a folded rag under the cup’s rim; the soft cloth soaked the stream and put to rest the wandering water. Damp fibers swelled slowly along the weave, gently locking the cup upright for the moment. She pressed a loaded brush back into the damaged wash, this time holding the board flatter so the color stayed. Along the porch plank, a widening blue stain crept beneath the rag’s edge toward the grass.
