English 원문
The block of pale cedar sat untouched, but a single curl of shaving clung to its edge. Oscar’s wrist brushed it as he leaned forward, and the shaving slid onto the bench. The empty workshop offered solitude; even street traffic reached only as a mild tremor under the stone foundation of the walls. Outside, intense afternoon glare spilled through the high panes, warming the grain. He rolled his shoulders, easing stiffness that had formed during hours of planing boards. Under the overhead window, an old wooden box rested, no larger than a lunch tin, its hinges sealed by dusty resin. A pigeon on the sill tilted its head, following each movement with a slow sway of its neck.
Oscar hooked two fingers under the box and lifted; surprising weight strained the tendons across his palm. He set it down again and tried to pry the lid with a narrow chisel, but the blade only flexed. A delicate pattern had been chiseled along the rim: a face carved in mid-shout, mouth wide, eyebrows frozen in intense emotion. The breathtaking precision of each line suggested a master hand. He noticed a faint gap beside the left hinge and pressed his thumb there; resin cracked, yet the lid still refused to rise. He shifted stance, braced a knee against the bench for leverage, and wedged a thin steel ruler into the gap.
The ruler slipped once, stinging his knuckles, yet Oscar continued, inching the metal deeper until a soft pop sighed through the quiet room. The lid rose barely a finger’s width, and a faint scent of cedar pitch escaped. Inside, where jewelry often sat in similar boxes, thin wooden tiles stacked like playing cards showed interlocking grooves and numbers. Their arrangement hinted at a puzzle rather than storage; the box itself was not a container, but a breathtaking measuring tool awaiting assembly. Oscar exhaled, flexing cramped fingers, and lowered the lid back into place. From the sill, the pigeon dipped its head toward the box. It hopped onto the bench and pecked the loosened shaving.
