English 원문
Every morning Finn crossed the chill slipway to run his palm along the ribs of the half-built schooner, reading the wood like Braille. Today, a single damp footprint stained the pale oak plank beneath the keel, breaking the familiar pattern. Not once did he skip the inspection line, yet the mark felt as though someone else had stepped into his private ritual. Salt fog curled between frames, cool against his face, and the heel-shaped blot chilled the board around it. He traced the edges; the moisture clung in beads that shimmered before sinking into the grain. A tin cookie cutter, left from a crewman’s lunch, rocked nearby whenever wind threaded the hull, its star points tapping the plank in uneven rhythm.
He knelt, knife open, to prune ragged splinters from the nearest rib, thinking the print would fade once warmth returned, yet cold held it in place. Pitch kept in a small iron pot had cooled to a stiff lump; were the tar any thicker, it would stiffen before dusk. Steam rising around him, he worked it in his hands, kneading the mass the way galley bakers work dough before dawn. The substance softened, but a draft swept through the gapped planking and stole heat from his fingers, slowing each squeeze. He paused, wiped his palm, and looked back at the footprint. The edges had spread, not vanished, darkening the plank like bruised fruit.
It was the widening curve, not the depth, that unsettled him, for the arc matched the warping beginning to show in the keel beam itself. He tilted a lantern close; golden breath warmed the damp wood, and tiny bubbles surfaced where pitch seams met oak. If the mark were merely rainwater, the glow would dry it, yet new moisture emerged. He set down the lantern, stood, then returned, unwilling to leave the mystery half-read. A slow idea formed: the ship was sweating, exhaling tide-born damp through unseen pores. Accepting that, he chose to keep the spot exposed rather than seal it too soon, letting the hull speak through its leaking print.
As dusk folded into the yard, Finn traced the same path back toward the stempost. The fog cooled further, yet the oak around the footprint now glimmered with a thin frost, the aftermath of hours of quiet breathing between water and timber. What he noticed first was the cookie cutter no longer rocking; it lay silent, rim haloed by tiny ice crystals he had missed before. He lifted the metal star, placed it beside the damp outline, and watched frost bloom over both shapes like twin signatures from ship and man. Then, without brushing anything away, Finn closed his knife against his thigh and pressed his warm thumb gently into the chilled plank.
