The Chisel That Kept the Hull Waiting-

English 원문
No slim chisel rested in the shallow groove that ran the length of the nearest workbench. Luna noticed the groove at once, for a dustless stripe followed it, darker than the surrounding surface, as though the tool had only just been lifted. She set her canvas bag on the bench, the straps brushing curled oak shavings that released a sharper scent when disturbed. Light entered through gaps in the roof, sliding in long, angled sheets, and each sheet carried a spectrum of muted color where floating dust refracted it. Those shifting bands of color gathered under the hull like ripples of quiet water, collecting in the hollow that the rising tide would claim at dusk. The hollow, still raw and splintered, seemed to wait for something that never arrived.
Workers farther down the slipway tapped treenails in a slow rhythm; the sound traveled along oak ribs, announcing a camaraderie measured in wood and echo rather than words. Luna, who spent most mornings as a pet-sitter and afternoons deciphering ledgers as a novice translator, rarely matched that unspoken cadence. Yet today her boots drifted closer to the nearest keel block, guided by curiosity more than schedule. The farther she walked, the thicker the light became, until motes swirled around her sleeves like patient snow, accumulating on every idle surface. She brushed one sleeve, then the other, noticing how each flick left a faint grey crescent, another unobtrusive tally of passing minutes.
Nowhere among the tool racks could she spot a replacement, so her palm settled on a short pry-bar lying among wedges. She slid beneath the hull, knees pressing bark-stained blocks, and examined a plank whose outer edge refused to sit flush. Her fingers probed the seam until an iron shape stopped them; the dull gleam resolved into the missing chisel turned makeshift spacer. For a breath she hesitated, uncertain whether releasing it would undo someone’s patient alignment. Sleeves rolled higher, she tested the plank; the wood groaned, yet fibres tend to cling where steam had bent them. An amber shaft crossed the seam, showing a gap farther aft; at that sight she made her choice. She eased the chisel free, tapped once with the bar, and the plank lowered itself with a muted sigh.
It was the sudden hush after the plank settled that confirmed the fit, a silence deeper than the earlier ringing. Mallets still sounded down-slope, yet their notes arrived softened, as if the hull’s curve now caught and held the echoes. Behind her, motes drifted through that same amber shaft, stacking gradually until the spectrum returned, thicker and easier to notice. She watched the slow snowfall of dust; each particle landed where the chisel had earlier stood. Behind her, the shaded hollow glimmered, the tide’s faint mutter now mixing with a higher drip from somewhere unseen. She slipped the chisel into her canvas bag, brushed sawdust from her knuckles, and tightened her grip around the reclaimed steel.
