A faint breeze flicked the surface, and the print blurred further, yet its outline still implied a hurried step. The certainty pleased her at first: someone had crossed before dawn, perhaps a field hand late for work. A dragonfly skimmed the water—bright wings, an indifferent harbinger of the warming day.

She followed the channel downstream, shoes slipping on patches of green film. Peace hung in the air like unseen resin, though no sound heralded company. Her sleeves already damp, she pressed a knuckle against a tiny gate, hoping the hinge might budge; instead, it refused with silent persistence. If the stone lip were any higher, the flow would never spill over. What drifted beside her in the current was a small clay luminary—burnt wick long gone, sides stamped with swirling lines. The smell of char clung to it, leaving her to imagine last night’s fire scattered among the reeds, though the scene offered no ash.
