English 원문
Seth slid a thin wooden panel across the worktable; the edge rasped and left a pale line in the sawdust. He lifted two empty glass jars, set them side by side, then flicked one rim with a fingernail. A bright ring spread through the room and echoed off the tall cabinets. A shelf above held small curios: a clay penguin that leaned forward, a strip of cork, and a broad board painted long ago with an extensive glacier landscape stretching toward blank wilderness. The ring faded, so Seth poured a little water into one jar and tapped again. The note fell lower, and a faint vibration tickled the panel beneath his palms.
He laid a metal ruler across both jar mouths and struck the ruler’s center. The ruler quivered, adding a dry hum that tangled with the glassy tone. Tiny shivers ran through nearby tools; a rasp rattled, then stilled. Seth shifted the ruler one finger’s width and repeated the strike. This time the hum deepened and the painted board creaked against the wall, surprising him. He tried once more, choosing a new angle, yet the sound shrank to a thin whisper. Light from the high window touched the water inside each jar, making small ripples flash silver and vanish. The clay penguin tipped, regained balance, and froze in place. The ruler lay across the trembling rims. A thin, constant hum hovered around the worktable.
