Bram rose, following that brief alignment. It was the speckled edge that made him pause: the prints were not indentations at all but residue—thin crusts of zinc powder fused where the mirrored rings had stalled. Only after he scraped one with a screwdriver did the gleam vanish, the brittle film collapsing into dull flakes. A new doubt tugged at him; the pattern looked deliberate, almost decorative. Not once during last week’s shift had anyone tested powdered zinc in this corner. His broom forgotten, Bram rotated the gazebo toward the furnace, and the light path drifted; arcs leapt across the floor, overpainting the older crusts. The workbook beside the forge lay open on blank pages, ready yet unused.

He angled the model again, tilting its roof until a new ring touched the far wall where soot lay thickest. There, the glow settled into a rough outline of an archway, half-lost inside wavering shadow. For several breaths he stood immobile, broom distant, because the foundry now felt less like a workshop than a quiet gallery. Heat dropped a degree, and shards of light faltered, but the sketch remained. Only after the furnace door rumbled shut for its evening pause did he step back.
