English 원문
Hugo slid a dented steel pot across the narrow pier table, then steadied the burner underneath. Steam puffed upward and drifted toward a leather-bound recipe book lying open beside a coil of rope. He had spent the dawn chopping herbs, hoping the chowder would sharpen his growing culinary skills. Briny air scratched against the hiss of bubbling broth, while a gull’s shadow flickered over the metal lid he kept near his elbow.
A supply tug brushed the dock, and the sudden jolt rolled the pot three finger-widths forward. At the same moment, a waiter pushed a cart of plates along the planks; the wheels clattered, adding fresh vibration. Pages of the recipe book lifted like sails, threatening to dip into the soup. Hugo grabbed a wide tin serving tray that rested under the table and raised it as an improvised wall. Moist heat struck the tray, beading water that ran in quick threads toward his wrist. He kept stirring with his free hand, guarding the pages until the broth thickened.
The chef from the nearby café stepped out, curious, and tasted a spoonful without a word. The tray already bowed from the heat, its center dulled to a cloudy gray. A drop slid off the edge and soaked a loaf of crusty bread waiting for customers. Another rumble crossed the boards when the waiter returned; the warped tray slipped, clanged against a cleat, and skated toward the pier’s edge. Hugo lunged but missed. The rising tide tugged the bent metal deeper between the rocks. Foam kept sliding over the mark it left on the wet wood.
