Clara pushed a narrow cart between tall shelves, the small wheels wobbling over uneven floor tiles. She lifted a stack of notebooks, looped a wide elastic strap around them, and pulled until the strap lay taut. A low, peaceful hum came from an old fridge near the loading door, mixing with the faint rustle of dust that floated where light met shadow. Above her head, several thick exercise cords, kept in balance by a single metal hook, stretched from one beam to another.

One cord slipped from its hook and whipped downward. Clara ducked; the loose end sprang back, enjoying sudden freedom as it rebounded against a box. Rubber snapped again and again, almost an eternity of shaking motion. She slid a sheet of foam packing material from a nearby crate and wedged it upright as a shield. The foam flexed each time a cord struck, but unity between its tiny bubbles began to break; dents spread, edges tore, and flakes of white drifted onto the notebooks. She kept working behind the barrier, tying more straps while her knees braced the wavering board. On the final pull, the damaged foam split down the middle. A rebounding cord slapped through the gap, scattering loose beads over the cart and floor.

Clara rolled the cart toward the corridor, leaving the torn halves leaning against opposite shelves. Freed cords still bounced against the metal rack. Specks of foam drifted through shifting light whenever the rubber swung.
