English 원문
The canvas mat felt slightly rough under Greta’s palms. She, a retired teacher, stood beside Reed, a young gardener who often brought fresh cuttings to the small study corner. Warmth from the late-morning sun spread across the work table and brightened the glass frames lined in pairs. Today they aimed to mount a curled fern leaf, but the wooden frame relied on two thin elastic bands that had dried and tightened overnight. One band pulled the corners inward, while the brittle leaf threatened to crack outward if pressed too hard.
Greta hooked her thumb under the first band. It stretched, then rebounded against her nail. Reed pinched the fern’s stalk and whispered a counting rhythm so their motions matched; no instruction, only timing. Even with patience, the second band slipped and slapped the oak edge, startling both of them. Reed’s sincere grin broke the quiet, and he offered a wider strip of soft wax ribbon from his pocket. Greta threaded the ribbon through the tiny eyelets, then both of them pressed down together. The wax flexed, held the new curve, and the leaf unfurled a little, showing its pale underside. A faint tremor ran through the frame as the forces balanced; the leaf no longer fought the stretch, and the bands no longer dug into the wood. Two neat wax-tucked loops crossed over the fern, one side darkened by Greta’s chalk dust, the other side faintly green from Reed’s soil-marked fingers. A slow beam of light inched along the tabletop, catching the mixed colors on those loops.
