Rubbery mooring strap stretched under Cole's thumb; a faint chill passed through the blue surface. The strap linked a bollard to an empty dinghy and hung with a gentle sag above the wet boards. Viola knelt beside him and passed a narrow ribbon cut from an old sail. He threaded the soft strip through the strap, then let go. The strap snapped back, and the ribbon bounced, forming a small loop that flickered in the salt air. Curious, he added a second ribbon at a steeper angle. The fabric flexed when the strap tensed, and the two loops swung apart like tiny flags. Gulls turned overhead, and distant masts framed a wide valley where morning frost still sparkled on a terraced vineyard high beyond the harbor. Colors that nature arranged lay bright against the pale frost.

Viola tapped the strap to test its rebound, then slid a thicker piece of yellow canvas between the earlier loops. The added weight pulled the strap lower until its middle almost brushed the deck. When Cole released the tension, the whole line sprang upward, flicking something hidden inside the coiled mooring rope beside them. A thumb-sized glass jar rolled free and stopped against Viola's boot. Sunlight revealed golden nectar swirling inside, still clear despite the harbour grime. She raised an eyebrow; they had not expected a jar to nest inside ship’s gear. Cole laughed, shook the strap again, and watched the loops shiver like living seaweed. Together they tied the small jar to the last canvas strip, letting it dangle among the colors. The strap now held bands of green and white that zig-zagged across it, each knot different under their fingers. Gulls wheeled above, throwing quick shadows over the new stripe.
