The Ramp That Tipped-

English 원문
Max hopped from the stone edge onto a narrow service ramp, and the plank dipped under his boots. A gull lifted nearby, its wings beating hard enough to sway the hanging fenders against a metal post. Salt and tar mixed in the cool air; quiet spray tapped the wood like soft drumbeats.
Just beside him lay a handful of flat oyster shells. He slid one down the slanted board, and the shell gained speed, spun once, and stopped near a puddle. Curious, he repeated the motion with a thicker shell; this time extra weight carried it farther, where it knocked the first piece aside. The game felt simple, so he tried again, but now he dropped a round pebble after the shell. The pebble rolled faster, bumped the board’s edge, and made the gap between two planks open up a finger’s width. When the next small wave lifted the pier, the entire surface lurched. A wire crab enclosure, tied loosely to a ring, bumped the ramp and tilted it higher. All the shells and the pebble slid at once, clattering into the tide. Max crouched, watching ripples flutter across the dark water. A faint peep came from under the pier where nesting chicks hid, then the boards stilled.
Water marks spread along the wood, and he traced one with a fingertip before standing. A speckled sandpiper landed on the wet railing. It pecked once at a puddle and hurried along the beam.
