Grant stood near the fence, twisting faded horse blankets into long rolls for washing, while Hope fed the rope line that hung between two beams. The line, made from knotted harness elastic, already carried yesterday’s load and began to sag under the new weight. A weather-vane shaped like a kestrel turned above the ridge of the barn, creaking each time the breeze shifted. On the floor, an iron chisel, forgotten after morning repairs, glinted beside a cracked tile that once decorated a town plaza fountain and now served as a makeshift soap dish. Washing blankets in this corner had become quiet tradition on market eve.

When Grant heaved the third blanket, the stretched line dipped again and brushed dusty earth. Hope darted forward, grabbed a curved broom handle leaning against the rail, and wedged it upright under the rope like a prop. The handle flexed, pushing the line high enough for clear air. She folded the last wet cloth over the line and stepped back. Frayed splinters from the bowed handle clung to the blanket’s edge.
