Nora pushed the rooftop door outward, and warm air rushed around her trainers. She shuffled across the flat tiles toward a patch of open light. She had found five small mirror squares in a toolbox earlier. Now she placed one upon the smooth stone. A bright spot leapt onto the metal railing and quivered like a tiny torch. Shadows from a leafy tomato tub edged forward, covering the spot for a breath. They slid away when wind turned the stems. The flicker pleased Nora, so she tilted the mirror a little higher. The white wall of the stairwell caught a wider bar of light. Fine dust sparkled quietly inside the pale beam. The rooftop smelled of dry tar mixed with faint basil. The scent lingered after the recent harvest from the planter boxes.

Bending her knees, Nora slid a second square against a brick and leaned it at a steeper angle. Two streams of glare crossed each other, forming a shining X on the wall. The third piece bounced light toward a silver vent. A mellow glow folded over its curved surface with almost fabric-like tenderness, soft rather than sharp. A pigeon landed on the railing and paused at a respectful distance from the shifting spots. The bird’s broad chest feathers swelled against the breeze. The twin beams splintered across them and scattered onto a window of the neighboring house. Someone inside lifted a spoon; the spoon flashed back, turning the scene into a quick mirror conversation. Amused, Nora placed the fourth and fifth squares, but cloud shadow rolled in, erasing every stripe at once. She let the mirrors lie in a loose row and stepped back. A scrap of red kite cloth fluttered above the next roof. It pulled her eyes away from the scattered lights.
