A single fluorescent tube above the deep laundry sink pulsed, throwing thin white bars across the damp tiles. Flora rolled up her sleeves and opened the hot tap. Crystal clear water streamed out, grew misty with heat, and wrapped her hands in swirling steam. A narrow garden trowel, still cool from outdoors, lay beside the detergent box. She dipped its steel blade under the water. The sudden warmth coaxed a sharp hiss upward. Bright droplets leapt upward, struck the metal clothesline, and clung there in a trembling row. Each droplet thickened, lost its grip, and fell onto a stripe of dormant soap flakes on the floor. The powder burst into soft foam that crawled across a puddle. It formed a thin, shining path toward a stack made from the bulk of damp towels.

Somewhere behind her, a distant washer rattled, and the moist air carried a faint starch smell. Condensation striped the small window, blurring the view of the courtyard. Curiosity rather than plan steered Flora to repeat the trick. She swung one towel hard toward the clothesline. Its weight bent the metal just enough to tilt the remaining droplets. They rolled along the line and met the fresh steam. The two flows merged into larger beads that followed the earlier path of foam. The beads rained down and landed on the shining strip. They pushed the froth toward a warm iron standing nearby. Her quick intuition proved accurate: a glossy puddle started forming under the soleplate. She unplugged the iron, tipped it onto a dry rag, and wiped the plate clean. Then she rinsed the trowel under cool water and placed it upright in the dish rack. Water from the dripping line kept tapping the sink rim.

遠處的洗衣機在背後隆隆作響，潮濕的空氣帶來微弱的漿粉味。小窗上滿是冷凝水痕，把院子的景色弄得模糊一片。芙蘿拉沒有多想，再次嘗試剛才的把戲。她用力甩起一條毛巾掛到晾衣線上，毛巾的重量微微壓彎金屬，使剩下的水珠傾斜滑動。它們沿著線子滾動，遇到新升的蒸氣，兩股水氣合成更大的珠粒，再度追隨早先那道泡沫路線。水珠雨點般落下，擊中閃亮的痕跡，推著泡沫向附近一支溫熱的熨斗滑去。她靈敏的直覺果然沒錯，熨斗底板下開始聚出一層亮澤水灘。她拔掉插頭，把熨斗傾放在乾抹布上，抹乾底板。接著，她用冷水沖洗鏟子，立在瀝水架上。滴線上的水珠仍一下一下敲著水槽邊緣。
