When the Strap Sprang- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

A red aviation beacon atop a distant crane blinked and dappled the metal vent cap. A faint tar smell mixed with a distant hum from rooftop air units. On the flat roof, a junior squirrel padded along a taut laundry line that crossed the tar surface like a narrow bridge. Near the railing lay a canvas pouch, its drawstring tied to a thin elastic strap. The squirrel stepped onto the sagging fabric; the strap stretched, pulled the pouch downward, and made a cork lid inside pop up. The lid nudged a coiled garden hose. The hose flexed, rebounded, and kicked a loose pebble against a stack of foam mats. Each bounce left faint vibrations under the animal’s paws. Rust speckled the railing posts, showing seasons of rain and heat.

The squirrel pressed again, harder. The strap pulled farther, then sprang back; the pouch jerked upward and tossed a plastic seahorse charm into the air. The charm flipped twice and landed on the still-shivering hose, riding the wobble until both objects drifted against the mats left out to dry. The earlier pebble now rolled downhill, collecting dust along the flat plateau of connected roofs beyond the safety wall. A late afternoon breeze slid over the open height and helped refresh the tired tar smell while pushing the mats toward the railing. Their weight bent the strap once more; fabric groaned, and water trapped in a corner gutter splashed over the tiles. The squirrel skipped aside, ears flicking. Wind caught the loose strap and sent it swaying against the railing. Dust spiraled upward, blotting the tiny paw prints.

松鼠再度用力踩下。彈性帶拉得更長，隨後猛然回彈；袋子被抬起，把一個塑膠海馬吊飾拋向空中。吊飾翻轉兩圈，落在仍微顫的水管上，隨晃動滑行，最後與曬乾用的墊子碰在一起。先前的碎石此刻沿著安全牆外連綿屋頂的平坦高地滾動，沾滿灰塵。午後微風掠過高空，帶走瀝青倦味，同時推動墊子朝欄杆移動。墊子重量再次扯彎彈性帶；布料嘎吱作響，角落水槽積水濺向瓦面。松鼠側跳閃避，耳朵抖動。風抓住鬆脫的帶子，使其在欄杆上來回搖擺。塵土盤旋而上，覆蓋了細小的爪印。
