English 원문
Forrest trod across the corridor tiles, rubber sole rasping, and his next step smeared a thin pink mark that looped away like a silent ripple. A locker door banged somewhere above, the hollow clang rolling along the ceiling before fading behind the steady drone of fluorescent tubes.
The mark had been rubbed into the floor rather than drawn; powder still drifted when he tapped it with a ruler borrowed from an open desk. No early bell intruded, so the corridor stayed mostly quiet, save for drum-like footsteps rising from the stairwell. Forrest traced the streak past a broad window where playground shouts mixed with wind, forming a layered panorama of whistles, thuds, and distant squeaks. Under the glass, battered baseboards creaked each time he leaned closer. The faint line began to evolve: straight strokes turned into scattered circles near the supply closet threshold, as if the source had spun here. Intuition alone explained nothing; he needed a clearer sound. He nudged the closet door. Hinges grated, resisted, then relented with a drawn-out groan that slipped into the empty classroom behind him.
Inside, pipes hummed behind thin panels, and a soft drip kept time somewhere in the gloom. Dusty shelves carried jars, spare bulbs, and a cracked planter packed with brittle azalea petals—each petal sliding off with a near-silent sigh when he brushed past. He lifted the planter; more petals fell, pattering onto the floor and joining the pink powder. The earlier streak was no chalk after all; it had been scattered petals ground under shoes and swept outward by air currents. As air vents continued their low hiss, Forrest angled the planter, listening for the faint rattle of dry soil against ceramic. A loose corner of flooring shifted beneath his heel, and he was already pressing two fingers under the plank, waiting for the muted scrape that might follow.
