English 원문
The scrap plank lay perfectly square, but one thin edge curved upward like a wave. Sunlight from the open door reached the bench, catching the curve before Jasper even touched the wood. He pressed his thumb along the flat side and felt faint ridges hidden beneath a layer of grainy sawdust. A quick tap loosened the dust, and a tiny carved arch appeared where he expected only plain pine. The arch rose no higher than his fingernail, yet its crisp line contrasted with the rough bench surface. Jasper leaned closer, shoulders hunching, and traced the sharp outline while his elbows absorbed the bench’s uneven texture. The curve now resembled a miniature roof, raising a question about the scrap’s forgotten purpose.
He lifted the plank, shoulders tightening under its unexpected weight, and angled it toward a half-built birdhouse beside the vise. If the piece matched that frame, it would finally close the gap above the doorway. The plank slid halfway, then halted as swollen fibres pressed against the narrow opening. Jasper rocked the birdhouse gently, wrists absorbing each wobble, yet the corner refused to drop further. He withdrew the plank, braced it against his thigh, and rubbed the edge with coarse sandpaper until warm shavings curled away. Still it balked, proving the pine held more moisture than the other boards. He propped the stubborn piece near the sunny doorway, trusting the lingering heat to let the trapped water evaporate.
When the surface cooled, he turned the plank over, and a second carving caught his eye. Along the underside, a tiny marmot crouched beneath pointed windows that joined to form a delicate chapel façade. The scrap was no roof for a simple birdhouse; it belonged to the intricate scale model resting on the upper shelf. Jasper flexed his knees, rose onto the low stool, and balanced carefully while sliding the rediscovered wall between two slender rafters. Wood met wood with steady contact, and the ridge aligned without protest. He stepped back, toes tingling from the stretch, and pressed a scrap cloth over the chapel; a faint cedar aroma hovered.
