English 원문
The rope bucket hung still for a moment, but the loose plank beside it quivered at every faint gust. Xander crouched in the branch junction where three limbs squeezed together, aiming to slide a support plank between two bark ridges. The plank had been trimmed on the ground earlier, yet its fit now looked uncertain up here. Morning dew had swollen the older boards; a neat gap stayed wider than his new piece by a finger. He needed that gap shut firmly before driving a single nail into fresh wood. A quick compromise came to mind: press the raised end down with weight instead of trimming anything away. A flat chip of granite, hauled up earlier, now acted as a steady temporary weight. He placed it over the outer edge, and the squeak of bending wood told him the gap shrank slightly, though not enough. He eased the rope carefully toward the ground below where his parent sorted spare planks. A toolbox lid clanked sharply, and loose leaves rustled overhead in a brief cool gust.
When the bucket returned, it carried a cedar shim only as thick as a coin. Xander slid the strip under the plank, heard a low groan, yet a sliver of daylight still winked through the gap. He hooked the rope again, and the pulley squealed as the empty bucket dropped for another trip. During the pause he tapped the board with three thoughtful knocks, listening to the pitch rise like a small drum. The second shim, a hair thicker, shortened the opening to scarcely half a finger width. Wind shifted, and a sudden sway nudged the granite weight against the waiting bucket.
Metal rang against wood, sending the bucket swinging outward; its rim clipped the hanging ladder, which slapped a loose plank leaning nearby. That plank tumbled forward, but its corner jammed between two ridges, halting the chain before anything dropped. Reflex made Xander draw back his fingers, then he grabbed the ladder and steadied the bucket until the creaking slowed. The unexpected vault of objects revealed how easily movement could travel across the cramped platform. He eased one final paper-thin slip of cedar, and the three shims together pushed the plank flush with a soft hush. Below the platform, the bucket continued a gentle half-circle, rope fibres twisting against each other as it moved.
