Fine grit pressed against Olive’s fingertips each time she stroked the sandpaper over the narrow wooden groove. The frame on her workbench, washed by pale daylight from the high window, still refused to accept the frosted glass panel waiting nearby. A small misunderstanding about the panel’s thickness had left the slot too tight, and the panel stopped halfway, leaving a silver line of reflection across the bench. Olive aimed to resolve that friction before the afternoon cooled further.
Dust drifted in blue-grey streaks as she lifted a slim steel scraper. She began to scrutinize the inside walls of the groove, looking for ridges of dried primer. To gather evidence, she ran a dark graphite stick along the edge; bright scratches appeared where the wood rubbed the glass earlier. The first passes with the scraper loosened only powder, so she switched to a narrow chisel and a wooden mallet, tapping carefully. The board flexed, yet the panel still halted at the same point. When she slid it out again, a faint pencil line surfaced under the old varnish—someone long ago had marked a wider depth. That unexpected trace shifted her plan.
Olive set the chisel aside and reached for a small block plane, the blade recently honed. Slow strokes removed translucent curls until the original pencil guide lay clear and even. She pressed the panel once more; it glided farther, paused, but space now circled its lower edge. To verify the fit, she tilted the frame toward the window; a thread of sky showed through the gap, proving the wood had warped over seasons of humidity rather than simple paint build-up. Accepting the new problem, she leaned the panel against a stool and swept the shavings into a tray.
Hours later, after the workshop lights had cooled to shadow, the untouched frame stood on the bench. Fine blue dust lined the groove, and a single translucent shaving curled beside the mallet without stirring.
