Theo angled his shoe against the polished floor, slowing near the miniature city exhibit. Glass roofs sent a frost-white sheen across steel supports, and a tide of visitors drifted between columns, blocking the direct view. Clara’s sketchbook waited under her arm; she aimed to capture the museum’s oldest model before the group reached the next hall. The model, created by a celebrated architect in 1890, stood on a rotating platform that moved one slow degree every few seconds. Each time she lifted her pencil, another shoulder leaned across the frame, and the angle changed again. The constant motion pushed her goal further away, like a barge sliding from an inexperienced rower.

Theo pressed his palm to the railing, trying to lean on it for balance, yet a guard’s quiet cough froze the attempt and he stepped back. Scratches on the model’s steel-grey base showed where side panels had been dismantled for cleaning earlier; seams now left faint zig-zags that distracted Clara’s eye.
