"Silver rail ahead."
Theo angled his shoe against the polished floor, slowing near the miniature city exhibit. Glass roofs sent a frost-white sheen across steel supports, and a tide of visitors drifted between columns, blocking the direct view. Clara’s sketchbook waited under her arm; she aimed to capture the museum’s oldest model before the group reached the next hall. The model, created by a celebrated architect in 1890, stood on a rotating platform that moved one slow degree every few seconds. Each time she lifted her pencil, another shoulder leaned across the frame, and the angle changed again. The constant motion pushed her goal further away, like a barge sliding from an inexperienced rower.
Theo pressed his palm to the railing, trying to lean on it for balance, yet a guard’s quiet cough froze the attempt and he stepped back. Scratches on the model’s steel-grey base showed where side panels had been dismantled for cleaning earlier; seams now left faint zig-zags that distracted Clara’s eye. She shifted left, but fluorescent glare washed over her page. She shifted right, but a taller tourist raised a camera. Meanwhile, a movable information stand rolled past on silent casters, revealing a foldable scaffold stored behind a curtain. Theo glanced at the narrow ladder fixed to its side and tapped Clara’s elbow.
They wheeled the scaffold beside the case, bodies low and quiet, letting the crowd stream forward again. From the platform’s upper step Theo could finally convey the perfect viewpoint: a dusk-blue corner where missing shingles exposed attic beams no brochure mentioned. Clara had been searching for fresh detail; the hidden beams carried faint chalk lines, perhaps the architect’s first roof idea, still visible after decades. She had her page half filled when the rotating base paused without warning, a softer hum replacing the usual click, and the lights above dimmed to maintenance level. Shadows shifted, erasing the chalk marks. She kept pressing her pencil against the trembling paper.
