English 원문
The glass dome above the miniature harbour glowed icy blue, but the steel-grey control wheel beneath it refused to move. Cole placed both palms on the wheel and pushed; the rim rotated halfway before stiff resistance halted him. The rotating base under the tiny ships barely stirred, and a visitor counter flashed its final seconds in fluorescent digits. When the timer chimed, the attendant raised the rope barrier, and Cole stepped aside, empty-handed and blinking. The chrome handle had been polished smooth by many hands, leaving no texture for grip.
He moved toward the sketch corner where two easels faced a fossil display washed in cool overhead light. One easel freed up, and he lifted a graphite stick from a thoughtful arrangement of pencils sorted by length. Lines grew across the clipped paper, but a public-address chime signaled the next group, nudging him to relinquish space. Cole drifted to the audio-guide kiosk, hung his headset on the dispenser hook, and flicked through language panels. Just beyond, a scale kitchen diorama presented a neat dichotomy: bronze cookware dulled with age beside vividly painted fruit. A wax quince shone among crimson apples, its belonging to the set clear from the shared silver-flecked varnish. Nearby, ribbon strips shaped like birthday candles swayed gently, dangling from a wire arch near the souvenir stamp table. Cool air carried a faint note of polish while his footsteps echoed toward the corridor bend.
The tour group filed away, and an attendant laid a rubber-sleeved lever over the stubborn control wheel. Cole happened to pass again; his fingers closed around the new handle before he considered another attempt. With extra length and texture, the lever coaxed the mechanism around, and the harbour’s pale water-painted surface began rotating. Model ships glided beneath the fluorescent cast, tiny wakes rippling across blue-grey reflections without a single jolt. Cole stepped back as the timer restarted, the wheel now turning with quiet steadiness that required no further force. On the mezzanine above, Dina eased a matching lever on a model lighthouse, and its clockwork beam drew a slow silver circle.
