A pale rectangle of dust showed on the product shelf where a small barrel of hair clips had once stood. Dawn bent her knees, steadied her balance, and scanned each tier of bottles and brushes, but the bright clips were nowhere in sight.
She pivoted toward the waiting area. A netted magazine sling, shaped like a tiny hammock, sagged between two chrome poles; only glossy pages shifted there. Dawn’s shoulders tightened—the next customer would sit in the mirror station within minutes, and loose hair clips pinched the cape if not secured. She stepped past the swivel chair, the floor cushions under her shoes gripping slightly, and reached the hair-washing corner. A stainless towel rack lined the wall, bursting with freshly laundered cloths, yet no barrel hid among them. Water from the faucet warmed her forearms as she moved towels aside, but nothing rolled free.
Kane, the junior stylist, approached, keeping a steady stride to avoid bumping the tray of scissors nearby. He crouched, ran his fingers along the baseboard, and found a narrow panel behind the basin. The panel was being held by a single loose bolt. Dawn fetched a wrench, the weight of it pulling at her wrist. Together they leaned, Kane holding the basin edge for counter-balance while Dawn applied gradual pressure. The bolt rotated with a muted scrape, and the panel slid forward. Out tumbled the missing barrel, knocking against Dawn’s ankles before spinning across the tiles. Its lid cracked; a stream of neon clips scattered, clicking lightly as they bounced. Kane’s quick palm stopped the barrel, but the clips kept rolling, forming a bright trail toward the reception counter.
Both stylists gathered the pieces, knees pressing the floor, fingers darting after each runaway clip. At last they returned to the product shelf. The rectangle of dust that had outlined the missing barrel now framed a second gap where half the clips lay drying on a folded towel.
