Flora nudged the glass door aside, and the gap where the white rose bucket belonged displayed only a shining damp ring. Pale vapor from the refrigeration unit carried mingled scents of gerbera pollen, cut stems, and faint chlorine. Still, no airy rose fragrance drifted out. She leaned closer, her nose tracing the cool watery smell inside the shelf while her hand searched below for the container. Petals on nearby lilies left a metallic after-taste in the chilled airflow, warning that their freshness clock kept ticking. She hurried toward the back cooler, letting the delightful contrast of warm wrapping-paper spice and icy display mist swirl around her nostrils.
In the dim rear space, a fishy note replaced the floral chorus. An empty sardine tin had been lying on its side beneath stacked vases. The brine had seeped onto the floor, and a shop cat prowling for breakfast lapped at the slick trail. Flora lifted the overturned rose bucket; cool water gushed out, mixing sweet earthy scent with the cat’s salty feast. Startled by the spill, the cat bolted forward, brushing against a wooden yardstick propped against the wrapping station. The stick teetered, pressed a metal lever on the ribbon carousel, and coils of crimson satin spun free like fizzy drink foam.
Ribbon spirals slid across the floor, soaking up the mixed bouquet of fish, freesia, and chilled rose water. Flora tried to carve out a clear passage, but each step spread the slippery brew farther, and the satin strands kept drifting. She braced one knee against the counter, caught the yardstick, and wedged it between the carousel and work table. The satin flow slowed to a gentle trickle. Warm air from the front door mingled with the cooler’s mint-sharp breath, thinning the heavy odor that had clouded the workspace. She returned the freshly rinsed bucket to the display shelf; the spot that had been empty now glimmered with water beads. Thin ribbons kept sliding across the cool tiles toward the open doorway.
