Nora edged through the workshop door, a sheet of evening chill riding in behind her. Hardly had she crossed the threshold when the loom’s taut warp brushed her knuckles with a faint, metallic coolness. Overhead, a high window leaked pale light from the river district, and steam from her breath clouded, then thinned. She set a small iron kettle close to the embers, hoping to conserve what little warmth the stove still breathed, and slid the shuttle forward. Its kinetic glide produced a low, hollow thunk each time it struck the frame, a heartbeat she trusted to keep pace with her thoughts.

Row after row grew beneath her fingers, the emerging cloth marching through a full gamut of soft browns and muted blues. Hands chilled, she blew on her fingertips before straightening her spine; the tension bar felt rigid, yet sure. If the front beam were any looser, the pattern would sag, she noted, and leaned in, shoulders squared. A sudden whistle from the window edge made her pause. Threads near the center quivered, hinting at strain she had not planned for, yet she pushed on, convinced her preparation would hold.

Only when Oscar swung the door wider to fetch pliers did the real shift appear. A sharper draught rolled across the room, the warp contracting just enough to bend the shuttle’s path. What stopped her was the slack now gathering in uneven wedges across the weft. She set the shuttle aside, rubbed her palms, then angled her body, drawing the cloth toward her instead of pushing through. Bit by bit, the warp accepted the change, the loom quieting to a muted thrumming; nevertheless, a faint zigzag remained, an uninvited mark the cloth would carry.

She tied the final knot for the night and stepped back to the doorway, the same plank where evening cold first greeted her. The draft still lingered, yet the cloth hung heavier than before, its surface shimmering where the zigzag caught the firelight. Previously she had walked past the spare spool on the sill without notice; now its pale thread dangled, swaying in the warm updraft from the kettle and making a soft, irregular tap against the wood.

她為今晚打上最後一結，退回到最初踏入的門板旁，晚風仍在那裡逗留。布比方才沉重，斜紋區在火光中閃動。她先前未在意窗臺備用線軸，如今卻看到那淡色線頭正因壺口升起的暖流而晃動，輕輕、不規則地敲著木板。
