The Fallen Shuttle Beneath the Loom-

English 원문
The shuttle lay on the floor beneath the loom, its trail of pale wool tracing an untidy curve across the boards. Noon glare slanted through the high window and settled upon that faint line, turning the loose fibers into a narrow ribbon of light. Seldom had the weaving room looked so still; even the warp threads, usually quivering, held their breath. A gentle kerfuffle of sparrow wings stirred beyond the glass, then silence returned, broken only when Grey’s shoes clicked over the boards.
Grey crouched, palm hovering above the fallen shuttle, then drew back, unsure whether the curved thread revealed a simple slip or something deeper. His fingertips brushed the warp; one strand offered an irregular resistance, thicker where moisture from earlier steaming had dried unevenly. The cloth upon the front beam showed no flaw, yet the tension whispered of hidden upheaval. What stopped him was the memory of yesterday’s patient rows: each stood locked behind the fresh ones like footsteps sealed in wet sand, impossible to unpick without losing hours. He straightened, brows tightening, and wiped wool dust from his sleeve while a wedge of amber light pooled wider across the threshold.
Had the bobbin been lighter, it might have rested on the boards, but its wooden weight tugged again and the shuttle began to plummet through the open shed. Instinct overruled caution; Grey’s foot shot forward, arresting the fall with the sole of his boot. The collision jolted the beater bar, and a hush rolled through the warp as every string vibrated in descending order, harp-like. The brief music exposed the trouble: one thread hissed against its neighbours, slightly rough, caught on a splintered heddle eye. Grey’s shoulders eased, discovery replacing doubt, though he voiced none of it. Satisfied that the flaw lay in the heddle rather than the cloth, he reached for a spare wire loop resting inside the drawer, sleeve brushing the beam’s smooth grain.
Light shifted again, softer now, yet bright enough to gild the original curve of wool still resting on the floorboards. With the heddle replaced, the warp sang in even tension; dust motes drifted rather than spun, and no fresh tremor travelled through the frame. Grey paused beside the curve he had first misread and noticed how neatly it mirrored the growing pattern—a quiet echo he had overlooked when haste blinded him. He gathered the loose strand, wound it back through the shuttle’s eye, and, without further sound, Grey set the shuttle back onto the bench, its polished wood catching the late amber light.
