Leak Above the Planter Box-

English 원문
The sharp tang of wet iron clung to the mill’s dim loft, mingling with the sweeter scent of soaked cellulose. Ada pressed her palms against a sheet still glistening on its frame; the fibers held a faint warmth, then cooled under her touch. Around her, vats the size of bathtubs churned grey pulp, the surface a kaleidoscopic swirl where red rag scraps merged with pale linen threads. An optimistic approach to the morning’s quota had convinced her to run three vats in parallel, hoping the rhythm would fall into place before noon. Somewhere below that hum, a muted drip echoed once, then fell silent.
Hardly had she lifted a second frame when the drip returned, steadier this time. A bead slipped from the feeding trough, tapped the floor, and vanished. Moments later a thin ribbon of water traced the grain between planks, darkening the wood like ink upon blotting paper. Ada shifted her stance, expecting the ribbon to stop; instead it grew, fed by unseen seepage. Only when a quart or so of thin grey liquid pooled around her boot did the pattern become undeniable. She wiped her sleeve across the brass gauge—numbers blurred by condensation—and noticed the pump lever vibrating more than usual, as though the line beneath jolted with every stroke.
She reached for the lever, then paused; a sudden creak on the stair announced Luke, arms dotted with pulp flecks. His brow lifted at the spreading puddle. Without commentary, he slid a splintered planter box from beneath a drying rack, upended its soil-less cavity, and wedged it under the leaking joint. Ada fought the urge to hasten, her fingers matching Luke’s slower rhythm. Scarcely were his fingers clear when the sagging hose slipped further, spilling a fresh sheet of liquid across the improvised gutter. If the clamp were tighter, the hose would hold, yet the screw head lay stripped. Ada knelt, shoulders brushing Luke’s, and together they wound coarse twine around the joint, each turn sinking into the wet fabric until the ooze slowed to a reluctant trickle.
With the flow restrained, the two remained crouched beside the planter box, palms mottled by pulp and grit. Outside, noon light slanted through slats, sparkling across the calm puddle that still covered the floorboards. Ada rocked back on her heels, running a thumb along the twine to test its hold; no fresh bead formed. What stopped her from rushing back to the frames was not fatigue but the way the pooled water mirrored the loft beams—skewed, shimmering, uncomplicated. Luke rose first, footsteps squelching. Ada followed more slowly, leaving behind only the subdued thrum of the vats and the faint tap of a single drop finding the planter’s hollow edge.
