With the flow restrained, the two remained crouched beside the planter box, palms mottled by pulp and grit. Outside, noon light slanted through slats, sparkling across the calm puddle that still covered the floorboards. Ada rocked back on her heels, running a thumb along the twine to test its hold; no fresh bead formed. What stopped her from rushing back to the frames was not fatigue but the way the pooled water mirrored the loft beams—skewed, shimmering, uncomplicated. Luke rose first, footsteps squelching.
