English 원문
Hardly had Olive ducked beneath the low lintel before cool spray from the turning wheel flecked her forehead and sleeves. She traced the nearest beam with two fingers, feeling grain swollen by years of mist until a strip of dry wood appeared. The place was familiar down to the rhythm of water against stone, yet something tiny fluttered in her thoughts like an unbroken question. Years earlier, she and five cousins would cook up a storm beside the mill, bread rounds puffing while flour drifted like midsummer snow. Scraps of red cloth from the last village jamboree still hung above the oven arch, their colors now dulled to the shade of old clay.
She moved toward the grindstone platform, noticing the first absence: the wooden scoop that once leaned against the hopper lay nowhere on the floorboards. A faint seam of lighter wood showed where its handle had rubbed, a pale rectangle that looked as barren as tundra beneath thawing sky. Further on, she brushed aside husks piled under the chute, and dust unfurled upward, shimmering yet silent, as though waiting for some forgotten gesture. Her fingertips met a ridge of crumbs; automatically she scoffed one, then paused, surprised by the sharp rye tang still hiding inside the dryness. Nowhere in the mill could she hear the ladle’s soft clatter that once chased every turn of the wheel. Her palms dusted pale, she pressed them against her apron before moving on, feeling grain scratch the coarse fabric.
Only when the water slowed for an instant did she notice a thin vibration underfoot, as if the floor sighed after too long bearing weight. What gripped her was not the sound, but the way flour dust rippled across that pale rectangle, collecting until the surface changed color. She dragged a worn bench closer, its legs rasping on the damp boards, and, bracing both palms, pushed against the wall to shift the hopper. The wood yielded by a fraction; a whitened crust broke away, exposing an outline carved so lightly that daylight barely caught the grooves. A pair of open hands, thumb to thumb, formed a quiet arch—an everyday welcome she had passed countless times without seeing. If the wheel were still, the carving might vanish into shadow, yet here it glimmered under drifting dust.
Olive slid the bench back, swept excess flour with the side of her sleeve, and retraced her steps toward the doorway. The same scraps from the jamboree fluttered above, yet now their faded threads pointed directly toward the small arch of hands on the wall. Seldom had she noticed how flour clung to every surface, marking what endured more surely than ink. Behind her, the wheel resumed its steady churn, and a fresh ribbon of water lapped against the stones outside the sill.
