English 원문
Every evening after switching off the exhibition lights, Mabel, the young curator, slipped through the narrow door into the darkroom. Tonight a pale moth drifted under the red safelight, hovering like ash before settling on the empty enlarger base. Its powdery wings turned crimson, staining darkness with brief flashes that felt brighter than any daylight memory. Outside, neon from the street barely seeped through the double curtain, reinforcing the chamber’s deliberate, nocturnal isolation. She hung her coat on the usual peg, yet her gaze stayed with the visitor tapping tiny feet against cold metal. Steam from the wash sink brushed her cheeks, carrying the sharp vinegar edge of fixer that masked every other scent. Scarcely had the timer begun its slow pulse when she noticed the silence between ticks stretching wider than usual.
She drew a cylindrical film canister from her apron, its surface slick with condensation collected during the afternoon walk from storage. With practiced pressure she fed the negative of a sea-beaten outcropping into the enlarger, the perforations shining like tidy rivets. Water slipped from her glove, landing on the easel; the moth quivered, then returned to motionless glamour beneath red haze. The first test strip floated up from the developer, edges curling where humid air refused to release its grip. What stopped her was the ghostly wing mark smudging the horizon, a pale interruption across cliffs and storm-shaken water. If the fixer were any stronger, the imprint might vanish, yet harsher chemistry could erase fine grains along the rock face. She pressed one finger against the paper, and the curled edge yielded, though a faint wrinkle crept inward like nervous tide.
Her gloves still dripping, she lifted the sheet to blotting board, believing gentle pressure might tame the rebellion without further stain. The buckle flattened quickly, yet the wing outline deepened, swallowing the distant lighthouse until land, sea, and insect merged. Solving one flaw had magnified another, and the growing patch now threatened to rewrite the entire coastal memory. Only when the moth glided toward running water did she notice that its living path matched the new arc on paper. Imagination sparked, and she trimmed the swollen horizon, blades murmuring through damp fiber, granting the print a narrower but breathing sky. Little did she label the choice courageous; the safelight alone recorded her shoulders lowering as the timer resumed its even rhythm. She finally slipped the damp, narrower print into a clean cardboard folder waiting on the stool.
