English 원문
Seth tugged the wooden pole across the humid path between rows of ferns, aiming for the skylight crank above the ivy. Rarely had the glasshouse felt so close and still; warmth pressed against his arms, and beads of water crawled down every pane. He longed to spend time with the orchids later, yet the trapped heat pinned him to this task first. A thin vine wrapped around the iron handle, sticky with sap, and each pull only tightened the green cord. The pole slipped twice, tapping the glass without sound, and the quiet seemed to thicken, offering a pocket of inner peace even as sweat gathered along his jaw.
Palm still damp, he crouched beside a bench where tomato stalks leaned on bamboo supports. Hanging beneath a leaf, a silvery cocoon shimmered, its surface pulsing faintly like breath in a mirror. The peppers nearby displayed plain fortitude, leaves untroubled by the heat, whereas this fragile package depended on stillness. He watched, his breathing easing into the muffled air; through such introspection he measured time not by minutes but by slow drip lines of condensation. No sooner had a drop struck the soil than he pictured the moth inside, folding and unfolding possibilities. Though nothing moved around him, the space felt ready for change.
Only when he straightened did the weight of the moment return. He raised the pole once more, slid its tip beneath the vine, and levered the green strand away from the handle. Scarcely had the stem snapped free than the skylight groaned, gravity urging the panel outward. A thin rush of cooler air spilled downward, swirling steamy clouds across his knees. Surprised by the sudden shift, he stepped back too quickly, brushing a clay pot from the shelf; soil fanned across the tiles, dark against the wet stone, and an earthy scent burst upward, mingling with the new breeze. For an instant he considered closing the gap, then let the vent hang open.
The draft bowed the tomato leaves, and the cocoon rocked on its thread, swinging wider than before. He steadied the bamboo support with two fingers, listening to the faint creak of fibers under strain, then aligned the fallen pot upright, its cracked rim now facing the aisle. Little by little, mist cleared from the upper panes, revealing a pale sky beyond; it was as though the glass were breathing at last. He remained beside the bench longer than planned, matching his own rhythm to the gentle motion overhead. When he finally turned toward the door, cool air slid along the floor and brushed the cocoon like a whisper that kept moving.
